Top Dawg Draft Recap

This year I feel the Browns made ONE OUTSTANDING pick in Defensive End Courtney Brown and a few VERY GOOD picks in WR Dennis Northcutt and Travis Prentice, RB from the original Miami University in Oxford, Ohio! And a few odd picks:
They selected QB Spergon Wynn of SW Texas State, no true Tight End - a big need and few Offensive linemen (always a need per Len Filppu our BABB expert analyst). The early word on Wynn is that he will serve as the 3rd QB and is "extremely intelligent, with a strong arm..".

The Big story is Courtney Brown of Penn State. Brown is not only big, fast but also #1 in character. He is PSU's all-time sack leader and the word on him is that he is just learning sack skills. Brown combines an initial quick move with superior closing speed. Every game he was doubled teamed and still lead the team in sacks. In HS he earned a 4.0 while playing 3 sports. He his only rap is he is quiet. Courtney Brown lets his actions speak loud and clear and will be a refreshing addition to our improved defensive line.

The next good pick is WR Dennis Northcutt from Arizona. Northcutt was ranked as the #4 WR by Mel Kiper with a 9.1 rating (Warrick was rated 9.6). Dennis is fast with a 4.40 40 and is just over 5-10 and 175 lbs. At Arizona he was the all-time leader in catches and yardage. Northcutt is according to Mel Kiper "quite a weapon...is greased lightning, ranking as the most dangerous wide-out in the broken field...just get the ball in his hands and good things will happen. While Northcutt is only 5-10/ 175 he is strong for his size, has tremendously quick feet and plays taller that his size.

Travis Prentice is ranked 9.0 (5th RB) by Mel Kiper. Prentice had a brilliant career at Miami (OH). He was amazingly durable, never missing a game and carried the ball 862 time without a fumble! He is strong and able to break tackles with great balance.. sounds a little like the greatest RB of all-time, #32 of the Browns! Mel says that Travis Prentice "may turn out to be the top RB of the draft!".

Aaron Shea of Michigan was selected as an apparent Tight End. He is listed as a Fullback but did play TE at Big Blue. He is 6-4/ 253 and runs a good 4.7. But there were true TE's on the board when Aaron was selected, such as Kent's highly ranked Jason Gavadza.

CB Lewis Sanders selected in the 4th Round is a potential starter and has great ratings from Mel Kiper at 8.6 (the top ranked CB was only 8.8, Deltha O'Neal from Cal). Sanders is just over 6 feet and 200 lbs and runs the forty in 4.48. His cover skills are outstanding and his size and ball skills make him one of the best CB's in the draft. Lewis Sanders played at Maryland and could challenge for the top CB spot.

Who will be a future "Top Dawg" from this group...and who will start?

I give the Browns a "B+" in the draft. What do you think about these players - let us know on the BABB Forum page.

Go Browns!
