DAWG: 2001 BROWNS DRAFT INSIGHT EDITION The Browns were unable to trade their first round pick (third overall) and went with the NFL Champion Baltimore Raven formula -- DEFENSE! Filling not only a need, the Browns picked the TOP RATED defensive player in the draft -- Gerard Warren, the huge Defensive Tackle from University of Florida. Here's what NFL Draft expert Mel Kiper says about Warren: "Gerard Warren ranks as the #1 defensive player this year. Warren combines power in his pass rush, with the quickness and athleticism to effectively handle the double team that he sees on a play by play basis. You don't see many DT's with his dimensions who possesses the agility he brings to the interior of the defensive line." Here is what Pro Football Weekly says about Warren: "Massive size. Excellent natural strength and power. Can control the line of scrimmage. Power-type pass rusher with quick hands and quick feet. Good athlete for his size. Has a mean streak." The Browns have made an outstanding pick here as the Browns defensive tackles are on the light side and now with Warren at 6-4, 325 pounds, they have a real power DT to team with Courtney Brown at DE to be force that will hard to stop. The only reason the Ravens won the big game is that their defense, with huge DT's, gave their average at best offense the ball in great field position all game long. The second pick is Quincy Morgan, WR, Kansas State. Morgan has very good size and speed. Has the ability to get deep and separate. Good runner after the catch. A playmaker and a big-play guy. Wants the ball in the clutch. Can dominate games at times, as he showed in the 2000 game against Nebraska. He was the 10th ranked WR by Mel Kiper. Mel says this about Morgan: "Morgan can be a boom or bust, he needs to increase his concentration level. Morgan's size (6-1, 209 lbs), athleticism, and deceptive speed will prove to be quite a challenge for opposing CB's." The only question I have is that Chad Johnson a much higher ranked WR from Oregon State was also available when they selected Morgan. RB from Miami (FL) James Jackson was the Round 3 pick. New Browns Coach Davis's RB from Miami, Jackson has been a good player on a good team that played good competition and used a pro-style offense and practiced very hard. Looks the part. Has enough speed to get outside. Plays faster than his time. Has really good feet. Shows good run vision inside and outside. Came on late in his senior year. Again this year the Browns did NOT take an offensive lineman in the first six rounds. Paul Zakauskas an OG was taken in the 7th. Unless the Browns have a deal cooking to get a new right guard, we have a huge hole to fill on the line. There were several highly ranked OG's in the third round, but we had to take Davis's RB from Miami. As our member from NE Ohio, Tom Finan may say about this lack of drafting a top OT or OG and I agree: "AAAAAGGGHHHH!" Many of you say that these are only draft picks and rookies, well with a 3-13 talent team we need to be darn sure that these higher picks contribute right now! The 2001 season must show some great progress, the team is no longer considered a new team as of today! Go Browns -- and don't forget to renew for 2001 and take advantage of the great season ticket raffle! Give me a call or email your comments.
