Browns 2000: Of youth and speed
Browns get younger and faster - Rookies impressive!

Coach Chris Palmer and Dwight Clark, Director of Football Operations, seemed pleased with the team's progress during the initial practice sessions before the full practices begin this July. The Browns do NOT plan to go after any big names from the players released last month due to salary cap problems. Who will be the first "Top Dawg" from this years new players? Do Browns need to add to the team from free agent pool?

There's some interesting names, but not any that we're going to go after,'' Clark said. We're happy with the young guys we drafted, and we're planning on giving them a shot . . . until they show us that they're not even ready for a shot. Then, we'll go and see what's still out there in free agency.''

Palmer agreed with Clark and feels the team is more talented than a year ago, even with the inexperienced rookies. Areas in which the Browns are inexperienced at remain in a few key positions such as wide receiver, tight end, offensive line and linebacker.

The 2000 draft class was extremely impressive at the full-squad minicamp, which concluded on June 30 at the Browns Berea practice facility. Third round pick, JaJuan Dawson (ranked as the 37th rated WR by Mel Kiper) and cornerback Anthony Malbrough (ranked the 52nd CB by Mel) stood out. JaJuan Dawson, from Tulane, outjumped three defensive backs for a spectacular Paul Warfield-type catch and held onto the ball when he hit the ground.

Dwight Clark is feels that Dawson and second-round pick Dennis Northcutt of Arizona will work well with Kevin Johnson and Darrin Chiaverini and so a WR from the free agent pool may not be needed.

The situation is the same at cornerback. With Corey Fuller and Daylon McCutcheon as first-stringers, the Browns hope to find a nickel back and enough depth from a group that includes Malbrough, fourth-round pick Lewis Sanders of Maryland and Lamar Chapman of Kansas State. Malbrough, a fifth-round pick from Texas Tech, earned himself two interceptions in one workout in June.

There is no doubt that the Browns' strength is with the defensive line. Courntney Brown and free agents Orpheus Roye and Keith McKenzie give Cleveland speed it did not have last season.

The offensive line will change this season with free-agent left tackle Roman Oben replacing Lomas Brown, Steve Zahursky taking over at right tackle for injured Orlando Brown and free agent Everett Lindsay slipping into the right guard spot.
