At
the recent BABB Banquet in Cupertino Browns runner #30 Jamel White
gave us a hint as to why Cleveland will make the Playoffs in 2002. Two words:
Butch Davis.
Butch not only is the premier judge of talent, proven with a nearly
NFL level University of Miami team he built, but a non-nonsense tough coach.
Jamel noted that at the end of last season Butch told the players:
Relax guys, have fun
.see you after next week! Yes, one week off, of
course Jamel was exaggerating but his point was that Butch expects every player
to be dedicated year round. Jamel stayed in his Strongsville home all year,
participated in Cleveland youth programs and worked out every day! In college
#30 Whites hero was Marshall Faulk and with Jamels size and
hands, and given the opportunity to play more, he too feels he can surprise and
reach Faulk-like levels. Jamel was let loose in the Green Bay game and gained
131 yards. But the Browns drafted William Green, the top ranked college runner.
The Browns also added quality and depth at WR with speed-merchant
Andre Davis from Va. Tech, a top guard-center, and three very promising
LBs. Add in big TE Darnell Sanders from Warrensville Heights and Ohio
State and you have a great draft.
In
free agency the team added:
- DE Kenard Lang (Redskins)
- S Robert Griffith (Vikings)
- OT Ryan Tucker (Rams)
- FB J.J. Johnson (Dolphins)
- WR Chris Sanders (Titans & Ohio State)
- OL Barry Stokes (Packers)
- LB Earl Holmes (Steelers)
The team has only ONE question mark: can these new offensive lineman
fill the talent gaps and protect Couch; and open holes for Green and White? I
say they will. And the Browns will be AT LEAST 10-6 this year. I would even say
11-5 and in the playoffs.
The fun watching games with other fans, attending games in person is
really back!
