SWEET
& SOUR SEASON
We
started 1999 with so much hope. False hope. And for those that saw most of the
games this past season, we saw a team that was improving each week. OK the
Browns were a lot like Chinese food - a nice plate to see but never enough fill
us up. Next year we may get to feast our eyes on a fuller plate of players (and
talent) that will satisfy our deserving hunger. Cleveland sold out every
Sunday. Last years "Super" Bowl team and supposedly "major league" city -
Atlanta did not sell out even one game. Browns fans deserve Prime Rib,
not Lemon Chicken. We need more fast, powerful, talented players to represent
the once "Greatest Show In Football" team and fans. Jimmy
Johnson has wisely said that a team that is in last or near last has a
better chance to move up dramatically with the top talent picks they earn, than
a team stuck in the middle. Eight and 8 teams pick average players in the
middle of the draft that perpetuate their position as good but not championship
caliber team (and players). Thank God for another Number One Pick in 2000.
So again, what the Browns did is FAR better for the long run than if
they won 5 or 6 games in 1999. Browns have a chance to get an impact, top end
player that adds more dramatically the extra-special talent they are so in need
of. Those that stayed away from the viewing sites missed some great
moments and fun As the team really did improve each week. Setting the stage for
a better 2000 and beyond. THIRD HARDEST SCHEDULE IN 1999
The Browns were supposed to have an easy schedule. Wrong. The New-Power
Rams and Colts were supposed to be pushovers in 1999. Then to top that, BOTH
the Jacksonville Jags and Tennessee Titans make the AFC Final game and they
face the Browns Twice EVERY year. So those that thought Cleveland would win at
least 5 or 6 games were more than disappointed and knee-jerked the blaming to
everyone in sight. Palmer, Dwight Clark, and even Lerner were all wrong. No one
realized that the Browns were Playing the THIRD HARDEST schedule in the NFL in
1999, not the easiest as planned! The Forty Niners were 2-14 TWO years in a row
before their dramatic rise to the Top and multiple Super Bowl Wins.
TOP DRAFT DAWGS - This column reported last month that Peter
Warrick was THE MAN to draft. I still hold true to that prediction, but
some other fine talent is available for the Browns to pick. What do you think?
Too early to tell, but keep posted to this column as next month we will have
the Top Dawg Draft pick predictions for the entire draft of Browns selections.
